Skincare & Science 101: Cleanser

All good skincare routines should start by perfecting the basics – the first step of which is to cleanse the skin of dirt, oil and pollution, using a cleanser that suits your skin type. I am a huge advocate of choosing affordable cleansers, as they are the only element to a routine that is not going to stay on the skin for considerable time to make an impact. The drugstore/pharmacy is the best place to look, especially with brands such as CeraVe, Simple and First Aid Beauty, that offer top-quality cleansers, at budget prices.

If you take one piece of advice from this article, let it be this: save on your cleanser and invest in your treatments.

Paula’s Choice Resist Brightening Essence

What is it?

A lightweight, radiance-reviving formula that works to combat uneven skin tone and texture.

This is a watery serum for all skin types that aims to brighten and correct imperfections, such as pigmentation. I picked this up as an option for fading post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation (the red marks that a blemish can leave behind on the skin).

QRxLabs Niacinamide + Retinol Serum

QRxLabs are a brand that I believe are still relatively unknown to many skinthusiasts. This is due to both a mixture of little information being available from the brand, themselves, as well as only having a single stockist in the UK – Victoria Health. The range offers interesting formulations, bringing together proven, scientific ingredients with budget-friendly pricing, making effective skincare available to all.

CeraVe in the UK

I had serious FOMO over this much-hyped brand for what felt like the longest time. That was until early 2018, when CeraVe finally launched in the UK (albeit, with a limited product range and with different formulations than the US brand offering). The affordable, dermatologist-loved line has a large cult following of dedicated skincare junkies for good reason – they do the basics.. and do them well.
